The Regional Transport Office (RTO), Madurai South, will organise a programme on July 17 to create an awareness of ‘speed governors' to be fitted to school and college vehicles.

According to the Regional Transport Officer (Madurai South), K. Selvakumar, such an initiative is being taken in Madurai for the first time in the State following the release of a Government Order making it mandatory for all school and college vehicles transporting children to use speed governors. The GO 536/2010 says that old vehicles of educational institutions should be fitted with speed governors before December 9, 2010. New vehicles should have the device at the time of registration.

Mr. Selvakumar said that four companies would display the device manufactured them at the programme in which there would also be lectures on Supreme Court guidelines and road rules and demonstration of speed governors.

Representatives of educational institutions from Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts will take part in the programme, which will be inaugurated by the Collector, C. Kamaraj.
