In a bid to get a feel of the road traffic congestion experienced at peak hours, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Alagiri paid a surprise visit to some busy places in the southern parts of the city on Monday.
The city has been experiencing traffic jams at many intersections. While the railway station and bus stands are crowded in the evenings, movement of vehicles at commercial areas are choked due to haphazard parking and activities such as loading and unloading of consignments from lorries.
According to an official spokesman, Mr. Alagiri visited Periyar bus stand, South Masi Street, Commissioner of Police office and Pudu Mandapam, where some of the traders impressed upon him the need to build a multi-storeyed building complex at the Kunnathur Chathiram. He also inspected the site where construction was under way to shift the central market.
Many motorists stressed the need to construct new fly-overs near Palanganatham junction and Kuruvikaran Salai, and subways at a few other places. A large number of people suggested shifting of the office of the Commissioner of Police.
