Former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri appeared before the Melur Judicial Magistrate in a case of assault on a revenue official during the 2011 general elections.
Campaigning for the elections, Mr. Alagiri, who was in the DMK then, canvassed for votes at a temple near Ambalakaranpatti.
As per the Election Commission of India guidelines, a team of poll staff led by the then Tahsildar Kalimuthu videographed the DMK members. When the cadre objected to it, there was chaos in the area.
It was alleged that the cadre roughed up the Tahsildar. Hence, the police registered a case against Mr. Alagiri and 20 others.
When the case came up for hearing, Magistrate Mahendra Boopathi read out the IPC Sections booked against them. The case has been posted to January 9.
