Erring autorickshaw drivers were fined on the spot and mini buses and mofussil buses instructed to remove air horns here on Monday.
In a surprise drive conducted by Transport Department officials near Uthangudi and other places, Rs 7,200 was realised as fine.
Four motorists, found talking over their mobile phones while driving vehicles, were also fined on the spot. About 20 air horns, used in the city limits, by bus drivers were also removed during the check.
Recently, Collector U. Sagayam had instructed transport authorities to closely monitor the rash and negligent drivers and punish erring motorists as per the MV Act.
The RTO (North) N. Ravichandran and other team of officials including R. Kalaiselvi, V. Vijay and T. Ganesa Subramanian warned the bus drivers not to drive in a rash manner and also counselled them to be more responsible on the road. Blowing of air horns within the city limits was banned and the High court had directed in this regard to take stern action against such violators.
The traffic police in the city also joined the team in educating the riders to wear helmet in their own safety and not to talk over mobile phones while driving.
