Over 160 advocates, including 10 women, staged a rail roko for nearly 25 minutes at Madurai junction on Wednesday, pressing for immediate withdrawal of the recent amendments to the Advocates Act.

The advocates, led by ad hoc committee member of Madurai District Bar Association Muthu Amuthanathan, managed to break the barricades put by the city and railway police and barge into the platforms at the railway station.

As Chennai-bound Guruvayur Express had just left Madurai station, the advocates rushed to Platform 4 where Madurai-Rameswaram passenger train was stabled. The advocates stood in front of the engine and raised slogans, demanding the withdrawal of the amendment.

Later, they left the station. However, the passenger train did not suffer any detention owing to the protest, the police said.
