“Till February end we have drinking water available for distribution in the city through Vaigai reservoir,” said Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri here on Wednesday.
With the failure of monsoon, the officials have been taking alternative steps to combat water shortage. The storage at the Vaigai reservoir level was a little over 25 feet, while the Periyar water level was hovering around 110 feet.
Apart from having identified water sources, digging of new borewells in over 500 locations around the city is expected to help meet the demand as there were close to 2,000 borewells, which were functioning presently, officials added.
About 40 private lorry operators were invited for a meeting on Tuesday, where the officials enquired about the source from where they were procuring water and the cost involved in distribution. This was just to understand the volume of drinking water availability so that in the event of demand, the service of private operators could be used.
In all, drinking water was available till February end and the real demand for water would begin from March, Mr. Nanduri said.
In another meeting, the Corporation officials have decided to procure bio-metric machines for recording the attendance of conservative workers including permanent, daily wage earners and those on contract terms. Initially, 50 machines would be purchased at a cost of Rs. 14 lakh.
