Madurai: Two pedestrians were killed when they were knocked down by a speeding Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus at Basingapuram under Alanganallur police station limits in the early hours of Monday.

The deceased were identified as N. Ramamoorthi (45) and M. Gopalakrishnan (50) of Basingapuram. When the duo, who were on their regular morning walk at Basingapuram, saw two stray cattle heads locking horns on the roadside, they tried to keep away from them and jumped on to the carriage way on Alanganallur Road.

The driver of the bus, which was proceeding from Periyar bus stand here to Lakkampatti near Alanganallur, could not control the vehicle, and the bus hit the duo.

While Ramamoorthi was killed on the spot, a seriously injured Gopalakrishnan was rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital here, where he succumbed to his injuries later. The bus driver abandoned the vehicle and fled from the scene.

Alanganallur police are investigating.
