A 31-year-old woman, identified as Gowri, wife of Venkatesan of Malaimagal Street in Nehru Nagar under S.S. Colony police station limits, was found dead under mysterious circumstances here on Friday.

Police said that following information from Venkatesan, a team visited the scene of crime.

An officer said that there were bruises on the body of the victim and the throat was slit. She could have been stabbed with either a knife or ‘aruval.’

Since jewels weighing three to five sovereigns were missing, the police suspect it could be a murder for gain.

The S.S. Colony area is one of the busiest locations in the city and as the news spread around 6 p.m., a huge crowd gathered near the house.

A senior police officer said that either someone known to the victim might have committed the crime or it could be the handiwork of a habitual offender who might have watched the movement of the woman.

The police teams were also gathering other details from the husband, a civil engineer.

The body was sent for post-mortem.

Two recent murders

Recently, an aged woman was found dead in her house and about a fortnight ago a young woman in Lake View Garden area near Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand was murdered by an armed gang.

The police have not solved these cases.
