RTOs conduct raids at 3 places in Madurai
In a combined drive against violations of provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, Regional Transport Officers of the city detained 31 vehicles at three points on Saturday.
The drive, according to N. Ravichandran, RTO (North), was primarily to check auto rickshaws.
They found vehicles driven without permits, registration or insurance certificates and overloaded with passengers and goods. Check reports were issued to 38 autorickshaws for various violations, including altered driver’s seat.
Twenty-eight goods vehicles were fined for overloading and eight detained for not possessing valid documents. Two omnibuses were fined for carrying goods on the roof. An unregistered car and a SUV without proper records were also detained, Mr. Ravichandran said. A spot fine of Rs. 35,400 was collected for the violations.
The vehicle check was conducted at Mattuthavani, Sellur and Tirupparankundram by teams led by Mr. Ravichandran, K. Kalyanakumar (RTO, Central) and S. Natarajan (RTO, South), with the assistance of police personnel. The RTOs have warned that the licence of the vehicle would be cancelled if booked for a violation for the second time.
