A total of 25,41,468 people are eligible to vote in the local body elections in Madurai district as per the electoral roll released here on Friday.

Of them, 12,59,777 voters - nearly 50 % of the electorate - reside in the 100 wards of the Madurai Corporation. Another 41.8 % of voters - a total of 10,62,981 - reside in the 13 panchayat unions which include 3,273 village panchayats. According to the data, the remaining 2,18,710 voters reside in the three municipalities and nine town panchayats.

Officials in the district administration said that the photo electoral roll released on Friday would be the final roll for the 2017 local body elections. “Even if someone applies for inclusion, he or she will not be eligible to vote in the local body elections. This is based on the assumption that the elections might be held within this year,” an official said.

An official statement said that the electoral roll would be put up for public view at the offices of the respective local bodies.
