18 schools in Madurai selected for virtual classrooms project

Eighteen government schools in Madurai district have been selected for the virtual classrooms project being implemented by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology of the Central government in collaboration with the State government.

These 18 schools, mostly located in rural areas of the district, will be equipped with gadgets like computer, projectors, electronic whiteboards, webcams, broadband internet connection and software that could enable technology-assisted learning in the schools.

Sources in the School Education Department said that one class room from each of the schools will be set up for virtual classrooms. The district recommended 25 schools of which 18 were chosen following a visit by the Central government team based on availability of high speed internet connection and spacious classrooms.

Officials said that this would be the first phase of the project and more number of schools brought under the project in a phased manner.

Among the 18 schools, Tirumangalam, Peraiyur, Usilampatti, Vannivelampatti, Melur, Samayanallur, Sholavandan, T. Kallupatti and Kallikudi were included.
