16 policemen injured as van capsizes near Madurai

Sixteen policemen were injured when their van ran into an electrical post and capsized at Melur, 13 km from here, police said.

The mishap occurred last night when the policemen were on their way to provide security for the forthcoming ‘Thevar Jayanthi,’ the birth anniversary celebrations of freedom fighter and Thevar community leader, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar.

The van was a part of three police vans that were proceeding to Ramanathapuram from Chennai as part of the bandobust arrangements for the event, to be held from Oct 27 to 30.

Police said the mishap occurred when the van lost control and ran into an electrical post, injuring 16 policemen.
