Woman hacked to death by brother-in-law

Probe reveals man was addicted to drugs and alcohol and showed signs of mental ailment.

In a shocking incident, a 39-year-old woman was hacked to death by the younger brother of her husband near Aluva on Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Radhika alias Rukiya, wife of M.A. Ravi, was attacked in front of her house around 11 a.m. The police arrested Madhu, 36, brother of Ravi, in this connection.

According to the police, the incident took place when the victim was sitting in the car porch of her house. “The woman was busy chopping vegetables while her children were playing just outside the porch. Suddenly, Madhu came out from the house with a sickle and hacked at her neck’’, officials said.

Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and the woman was brought to a hospital in Aluva. “Her windpipe was severed in the assault and she was declared dead about an hour later’’, the police said.

He was a mental case

Preliminary investigations revealed that Madhu had been addicted to drugs and alcohol and showed signs of mental ailment. The police, however, are yet to ascertain the factors leading to the murder. The body of the deceased was shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem. Madhu has been taken into custody and will be produced in court on Wednesday.
