Three colonies in West Kochi would get a Central assistance to the tune of Rs. 67.62 crore.
The Thuruthy, Kalvathy and Konchery colonies in Mattanchery would get the assistance from the Rajiv Avas Yojana scheme of the Central government. The Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee of the Ministry cleared the project on Monday, said communication from Mayor Tony Chammany.
The 755 families residing in these colonies would benefit from the housing projects supported by the Ministry of Housing and Poverty Alleviation. Going by the project proposal, 83 individual houses, 180 row houses, a two-storied building with six apartments and two apartment complexes which can house 398 families would be constructed. The project would also extend financial support to 88 families for renovating their dwelling units, the communication said.
Besides the housing projects, the Centre will also support the local body for setting up infrastructure facilities to the beneficiaries of the scheme. Roads, bridges, drinking water supply facility, waste management mechanism and sewage system can also be constructed using the Central aid.
Livelihood centres, ayurveda and homoeo clinics, an office of the Health Inspector, anganwadi, library and streetlighting facilities will also be set up at the select colonies. Fire-fighting and disaster management mechanisms will also be put in place. The local body aimed to complete the project within 36 months, the communication said.
The West Kochi colonies were the first to receive the support from among the 218 slums selected countrywide. The project was submitted for Central support as part of the drive of the local administration to phase out slums.
The city administration had earlier given shape to a slum-free Kochi project. Infrastructure development programmes and residential facilities will be provided to all the slums in the city in a phased manner, the communication said.
