Power supply was restored to the water treatment plant in Aluva early on Saturday after the timely intervention of the district administration and Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) officials.
The plant, run by the Kerala Water Authority, stopped functioning on Friday after a fault developed in two low tension lines that supplied power to the pump sets that drew water from the Periyar.
KWA officials said water supply had been restored in all parts of the city except in far flung areas such as Cheranalloor, Kumbalanghi, Chellanam, etc.
KWA officials praised the KSEB for taking prompt action.
“Usually such faults take up to 24 hours to be rectified. But the KSEB supplied power from multiple feeder lines within three hours which helped us resume pumping water,” said a senior KWA official.
The official said pumping at the plant had to be suspended between 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
The KSEB rectified the problem in the dedicated low tension supply lines by 1 a.m. on Saturday.
The official said Friday’s water supply disruption did not pose serious problems as the KWA had announced that water supply would be restricted due to interconnection works on pipelines at Kathrikadavu to supply water to West Kochi.
Another official said the interconnection work involving replacement of 36 inch pipelines with 48 inch ones at Kathrikadavu would be completed by Saturday night.
The pipelines are expected to increase water supply to West Kochi to about 6 million litres a day. Water supply to West Kochi was disrupted on Saturday on account of interconnection works.
