Waste water continues to flow into open drains

Waste water generated in households within Kochi Corporation limits continues to flow into open drains and canals, according to the Haritha Keralam survey.

About 13,664 households were directing the waste water generated either into open drains or nearby canals. Waste water was stored in soak pits at 5,521 households while 10,121 families used sewage pipes. The waste water was channelled towards trees on the compound in 2,536 households while 1,316 households used it for agricultural purposes. The number of households where soak pits need to be constructed by the local bodies was 6,085.

As many as 902 families dumped septic waste into open drains or canals once the pits got filled while 14,975 families depended on private agencies that run septic tanker lorries to collect toilet waste.
