Wastage a major issue

: Wastage in blood banks is a major issue as there is little co-ordination between blood banks. While wastage of 15-20 per cent is acceptable, many blood banks have a wastage of about 40-50 per cent, sources said.

Some centres catering to cancer surgeries would require more platelets than red blood cells. Hence the blood bank that produces all four components from a unit of blood wastes much of the other components.

Though introduction of apheresis in collecting just a component can save other blood components from going waste, the collecting kits are extremely expensive.
