Vaikom Satyagraha museum to come up

The State government has sanctioned Rs.40 lakh towards the establishment of Vaikom Satyagraha Memorial Museum and Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vaikom, according to K.C. Joseph, Minister for Culture. In a statement, he said the project would be taken up by the State Archives Department in association with Vaikom municipality.

The project will come up in the Vaikom Satyagraha memorial building adjacent to Vaikom boat jetty.

It includes the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, modernisation of the garden museum and the pathway and renovation of the present building as a museum to showcase information and images related to the Vaikom Satyagraha.

The plan for the memorial has been given shape by the Kerala Heritage and History Museum under the Department of Culture.

The State government was engaged in an effort to implement projects in various districts which will help to remind the younger generation of the role played by the State in the nation’s freedom movement.

The Vaikom Satyagraha memorial is one among these projects, the Minister said in the statement.
