The local organising committee of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Kochi will distribute free drinking water to spectators from the next match onwards.

In an official statement issued on Sunday, C.N. Mohanan, Chairman, Greater Cochin Development Authority, said steps had been initiated to rectify inconveniences to viewers reported during the earlier matches. A decision to this effect was made at a review meeting of the organising committee held here on Sunday.

As part of it, drinking water will be made available at 40 spots inside the venue and a team of 40 volunteers, five supervisors and 40 policemen will be deployed to coordinate its supply. The Legal Meteorology Department will ensure the sale of food at reasonable prices.

The local organising committee has forwarded a request to FIFA with regard to installing sign boards at various points inside the stadium to assist spectators. Further, a team of about 100 mechanics and 100 supervisors has been deployed to monitor and coordinate the emergency services, toilets and floodlights, etc.

Earlier, the Legal Meteorology Department registered a case against the agency contracted for the sale of food at the match venue for charging unreasonable prices.

Besides the GCDA chairman, nodal officer A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish and Deputy Police Commissioner (Kochi city) Karuppusami R also attended the review meeting.
