: The District Collector has ordered a ban on parking of trailers on the Container Terminal road to put an end to the spree of accidents.

District Collector M.G. Rajamanickam has directed the police and the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) to strictly enforce the ban while giving the Cochin Port Trust and DP World a week’s time to arrange parking facility for trailers.

Apart from trailers, parking of other vehicles has also been banned within 100 metres from junctions on the Container Terminal Road. The Collector gave the orders after visiting the accident prone areas on the road on Friday morning.

Later, he held consultations with representatives of the DP World and MVD at the office of the Goshree Island Development Authority.

Mr. Rajamanickam observed that National Highway Authority of India had failed to implement the decisions taken at a meeting held two months ago to discuss ways to avoid accidents on the road and warned that the agency cannot skirt responsibility for accidents.

The Collector said that parking of trailers and trucks alongside the road causing accidents cannot be allowed any longer. Those violating the parking ban will not only be slapped with fine but will have to face legal action. Action was initiated against illegal parking.

Meanwhile, local residents also approached the Collector with complaints that vehicular movement is not being allowed even in stretches where works had already been completed.

He visited spots where accidents had taken place recently Ponnarimangalam, Cheranalloor, Manjummel, Aanavaathil, and Kalamassery junctions. He directed the NHAI officials to inform the police about road works in advance. Police and MVD have been asked to deploy their squads on the Container road round-the-clock.
