The police on Monday arrested a man on the charge of sexually assaulting a woman at Thripunithura last week.

Krishnamurthy, 37, son of Sivaraman of Anjilathattam Lakshamveedu Colony at Thiruvamkulam, was charged under IPC Section 326 for causing grievous injury with weapon and Section 354 for outraging the modesty of a woman. He was produced before the magistrate court at Thripunithura and remanded in custody.

According to the police, Krishnamurthy had earlier served a jail term for his involvement in a theft case and was on the rowdy list of the Thripunithura Hill Palace Police Station. The police picked up Krishnamurthy from Thiruvankulam following an examination of CCTV footage that showed him moving in suspicious circumstances in the area.

The man confessed to committing the crime while being questioned, the police said. He also said that he was under the influence of alcohol. He also showed the police the concrete brick he had used to attack the woman.

According to officials, Krishnamurthy tried to grab the woman, and when she attempted to get away, he attacked her with the brick, causing grievous injuries on her face.

Her lips were torn and the front teeth broken in the assault. She was rushed to hospital, and an emergency surgery was performed. She is now said to be recuperating.
