In a first, the Kuruppampady police on Monday arrested three persons including the Chairman and president of the controversial Stray Dog Elimination Group.

The accused have been identified as O.M.Joy, President of the Stray Dog Elimination Group, Jose Maveli, its Chairman and Ranjan Varappuzha, a dog catcher. The three were arrested on the charges of unauthorised killing of four stray dogs and burying them at two locations near Pulluvazhy, Perumbavur.

The arrests followed a complaint filed by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Since the offences charged against the accused were bailable, they were released from police station after recording the arrest. Meanwhile, attempts are on to trace the street dogs allegedly in custody of the group, kept for the purpose of mass culling on October 2. “They are learned to have kept a huge number of stray dogs in a covered vehicle and efforts are on to trace these animals and free them’’, said Sajeev T.K, SPCA, Ernakulam.
