A 500 mm AC supply main at the Thammanam pump house sprang a leak on Friday cutting off the water supply to Maradu and Kumbalanghi areas.

Repairs began only by evening as large numbers of pipes stacked on the ground had to be put aside to excavate the area around the pipe. The leak was likely to be plugged by Saturday evening, said officials at Kerala Water Authority.

Maradu will be affected the most. Areas that used to get water from the supply line such as Kumbalam, Panangad, Kumbalanghi, Chellanam are now getting water from the Maradu plant.

About 10 million litres of water was being pumped through the pipeline in 24 hours. The pipe is about 25 years old and it is the first time that the supply main from the pump house has had a leak, said an official. It was a leak from the joint and not a pipe burst, the official added.
