The district panchayat on Monday launched its project ‘Manasiloru Bulb’ aimed at motivating children to conserve energy.
The project will be implemented through the Energy Conservation Society. Delivering the inaugural address, district panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappillil said that the project aims at inculcating the habit of energy conservation among children and propagating energy conservation message in society through them, thus finding a permanent solution to the energy crisis.
He hoped that the project would help reduce the consumption of energy in society. It will also help save energy for future use. As part of the project energy and environmental clubs will be formed in all schools and one lakh student volunteers will be enlisted.
The project aims at conserving at least 100W energy in each household. Mr. Kunnappillil said that the district aims at saving 10 MW power worth Rs.12 crore through the project. Ernakulam accounted for one-sixth of the State’s energy consumption. Mr. Kunnappillil said that the district should bring down its consumption and set a model for the rest of the State.
Various awareness programmes including seminars, special camps, cycle rallies, poster designing, and film screenings will be organised as part of the project. Energy survey and auditing are two other main objectives. Energy auditing will be undertaken with the help of engineering students from selected colleges in the district.
The average energy consumption could be assessed based on this door-to-door auditing. Awareness sessions will be held in those households where power consumption is found to be high.
The energy clubs formed in schools will be gradually launched in colleges. Energy Conservation Society chairman K.M. Amanulla presided. District panchayat vice-president Bindu George gave away certificates.
