Students of the Government Arts College, Tripunithura, took out a march to the Tripunithura municipal office on Friday, demanding immediate steps to properly maintain the waste dumping ground located adjacent to the college.

Students of the college were the most affected by the waste dumping ground at Mekkara, said the protesting students led by the college unit of the Students Federation of India.

“We had taken out another march before,” said Sujith N.S., SFI unit secretary. Then the municipal chairman had promised to initiate remedial measures in a phased manner, but the promise was not kept, he said. Municipal chairman R. Venugopal promised immediate action on the issue, he said.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Venugopal said that a waste management project costing about Rs.1.5 crore had already been proposed in the municipal budget. The dumping yard would be discarded once the proposed project was implemented, a survey for which was being carried out by the students of the college itself, he said.

Bleaching powder would be sprinkled on the yard to lessen the stench, he said.
