Local residents near the Mar Athanasius High School, Kakkanad, staged a protest at the school on Wednesday evening, alleging that one of the teachers behaved improperly with the students.

The incident that triggered the protest was a complaint by six students of Class 6 against Arabic teacher Moydeen Shah. The children dropped the complaint a fortnight ago in a box provided by the Childline at the school.

The complaint, which said the teacher used mobile phones extensively during class hours, cast indecent glances and pinched the students, was received by the headmistress on December 7. However, the news spread among the locals and this led to the protest on Wednesday, said local councillor of Thrikkakara municipality Prabhu Kumar, who was also present.

After the protests heated up, Thrikkakara police sent a team led by sub-inspector from the Women’s Cell to collect statements from the six students, who lodged the complaint.

Sources in the police said a case would be registered on the basis of the detailed statement given by the students. The teacher is from Kothamangalam.

The Child Welfare Committee chairperson Padmaja Nair said the committee would be getting the complaint only by Thursday and action would be initiated accordingly.
