Steps on to prevent impersonation: EC

May 11, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - KOCHI:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) will take all steps to prevent impersonation of electors in the Assembly polls, the commission stated before the High Court of Kerala.

The Election Commission made the submission on a petition filed by KPCC general secretary Sajeev Joseph against the permission to cast vote using authenticated photo voter slips distributed by booth-level officers (BLO).

Provisions amended

The Election Commission had recently amended the provisions regarding photo voter slips.

The amended provisions stipulated that all undistributed photo voter slips should be returned by the BLO to the electoral officer concerned, who should keep it in a sealed cover.

Voters slip

It was also specified that the distribution of authenticated photo voters slips should be completed at least five days before the polling day.

The commission had also clarified that the unauthorised distribution or possession of photo voters slips would be treated as violation of the provisions of the Representation of the People Act. Considering the submission of the ECI, Justice Anil K. Narendran closed the petition.
