: Confirming long-held suspicion, it has now emerged that water-borne diseases accounted for most of the diseases reported in the district. According to figures available up to July, 19,219 persons have sought treatment in the district for diarrhoea. The figures were released at the meeting held at the district collectorate on Saturday to discuss ways to fight epidemics.
While only less than 40 dengue cases were reported for the entire 2014, the number of cases has already surged to 128 this year. Similarly, the number of malaria cases has more than doubled to 85. However, no chikungunya cases have been reported so far.
The district has recorded 48 leptospirosis cases so far compared to 58 for the entire 2014. Hepatitis cases have surged to 58 already as against less than 20 reported last year. Besides, five typhoid cases and 13 H1N1 cases have also been reported.
Dengue cases have been reported from the Corporation limits and Edakkattuvayal, Vazhakkulam, Kalady, Kanjoor, Angamaly, Kottappady, and Ayyampuzha, while leptospirosis cases were reported from Corporation, Kumbalanghi, Kunnathunad, Amballoor and Thrikkakara. Hepatitis cases have been reported from Kalady, Karumaloor, Kanjoor, Malayattoor, and Vazhakkulam.
