SiGNS short film, docu festival from tomorrow

The 10th edition of the SiGNS short and docu film festival organised by the Federation of Film Societies of India and the Kochi Biennale Foundation will get under way at Ernakulam Town Hall on Wednesday.

Film director and Kerala Chalachithra Academy chairman Kamal will inaugurate the festival. Noted films on the theme of ‘resistance’ will be a major attraction at the fest. Rakesh Sharma’s documentary, Final Solution (2004), a shocking report on the 2002 Gujarat riots featuring testimonies of victims, will be shown in the Retrospective section.

The film, which was initially denied certification by the CBFC fearing a backlash from the right wing, later went on to win the President’s Film Award and also won two awards at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2004. Sharma’s ‘Aftershocks: A Rough guide to Democracy’ sheds light on the exploitative measures executed by corporate powers on two villages in Gujarat after the 2001 earthquake. .

The six-day fest features over 100 films in competition, focus, director’s pick and insight categories.
