To lend a hand to young entrepreneurs, the government plans to increase the space at the Kochi Start-up Village to five lakh sq.ft by 2018.
The move is expected to support at least 1,000 start-ups in the next 10 years. The technology business incubator is currently housed in 15,000 sq.ft.
In an interaction with The Hindu on the sidelines of the Youth Entrepreneurs Summit (YES) organised by the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation at Angamaly on Friday, P.H. Kurien, principal secretary for Information Technology, pointed out that a world class ecosystem comprising an international meeting centre, amphitheatre and other facilities would be ready by 2018. The project is to be completed in three phases.
Mr. Kurien said that talks were on with companies to set up centralised testing laboratories in electronics and other prospective areas in this space. The idea was to foster innovation, experimentation and technology development by effectively utilising the facility, he said.
The ongoing work to add 1.2 lakh sq.ft to the existing 15,000 sq.ft will be over by March 2015.
