Second case of diphtheria in Kochi district confirmed

The District Medical Office has confirmed a second case of diphtheria in Ernakulam.

A six-year-old tested positive for the disease at Mudikkal in Vazhakulam near here on Tuesday. Health officials said that measures had been strengthened to check the spread of the disease. A team of health workers visited nearly 156 homes in Mudikkal to create awareness about diphtheria. Samples were collected in two suspected cases.

An 18-year-old in Kaloor, who had shown symptoms of the disease, has tested negative. But health officials continued their efforts to create awareness among the public in the region on various aspects related to diphtheria. A survey has been launched areas near to the residences of the two persons who had shown symptoms of the disease in Irumpanam and Mattancherry.
