About 14, 865 students seeking admission for plus one this year

Commerce may be the most sought after subject in colleges but Science seems to be the top favourite among students aspiring to join plus one classes across Ernakulam district in the academic year 2012-13.

About 14, 865 students seeking admission for plus one through the single window admission process conducted by the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education have given Science Group I as their first choice of study.

The Science Group I combination consists of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. Commerce is in second position, with 11, 696 students mentioning it as their first choice. There are two combinations for Commerce stream that include Business Studies, Accountancy, Economics and Computer Applications; and Business Studies, Accountancy, Economics and Mathematics. The demand is more for the former combination. Only 808 candidates have kept the latter combination as their first choice. Science Group II combination that consists of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science is third among the most preferred streams. About 7, 599 candidates have opted for this combination as their first choice.

Official data pointed towards a fall in demand for Humanities stream. Only 1, 376 students selected Humanities Group I (History, Economics, Political Science and Geography) as their first choice.

According to the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education, over 30,900 seats are available for the Plus One programme in various schools in Ernakulam. The combined intake for science, commerce and humanities courses under the government quota is 10,432. For seats under the aided category, the total intake is 8,666.

The combined intake for science, commerce and humanities courses under the management quota is 5,615. There are about 5,685 seats under the unaided category in the district.

According to the Department of Higher Secondary Education, the seats available under the government and aided (merit) quota will be filled through the single-window system. The allotment will be made from the central pool in Thiruvananthapuram.
