Sanitation campaign marks Gandhi Jayanti in city

The district-level launch of ‘Suchitwa Mahotsavam 2011,' being held from October 2 to November 4 as part of cleanliness programmes across the State, was inaugurated here on Gandhi Jayanti Day by T. M. Jacob, Minister for Civil Supplies. Hibi Eden, MLA, presided over the function.

The report of the district sanitation committee was presented by the District Collector P. I. Sheikh Pareed. Dominic Presentation, MLA; Mayor Tony Chammany; T. K. Ashraf, chairman, Standing Council for Health, Kochi Corporation; Junaid Rahman, superintendent, General Hospital, K. V. Beena, district programme manager, National Rural Health Mission and P. K. Alexander, district sanitation co-ordinator spoke on the occasion.

Thandekkad Jamaat HSS School was awarded a trophy by Eldose Kunnappillil, District Panchayat President, for its programmes for controlling diseases.

Representatives of Bakers' Association, EDRAAC, RACE, Bharat Sevak Samaj, Malabar Cultural Centre, Kerala Hotel and Restaurants Association also participated.

The Corporation, along with the Education Department, took part in a cleanliness drive. Writer M. K. Sanu gave the message of the day and Mayor Tony Chammany presided.

The district committee of Kerala Police Association organised the cleaning up of Taluk Hospital in Tripunithura. Addressing the event at the hospital, K. Babu, Minister for Excise, said that the government's cleanliness campaign would go on for a year.

R. Venugopal, chairman, Tripunithura Municipal Council; G. Pradeep Kumar, assistant commandant of police, Shibu K. K., secretary of the district unit of the Police Association; participated in the programme.

The Old Railway Station premises were cleaned up by the Old Railway Station Vikasana Samithi here on Sunday. Hibi Eden, MLA, inaugurated the programme. Mr. Eden said that the station, where Mahatma Gandhi had arrived during his visit to Kerala, needed to be developed.
