Salinity incursion resulted in a nearly 50-minute break in the intake of raw water at the Aluva water treatment plant on Monday. However, it was learnt that supply was unaffected as there was enough stored water for treatment.
A breach in the temporary sand bund built in the last week of December is threatening to affect water supply with the level of salinity at the Aluva plant reportedly going up.
Officials of the minor irrigation department involved in the construction of the bund said repair work was likely to be completed by Wednesday.
Kerala Water Authority (KWA) officials told The Hindu that the salinity level in the water went up to 310 ppm (parts per million) early Monday.
However, the level came down soon after water was released from the Bhoothathankettu dam, situated about 50 km upstream.
About 60 cubic metres per second (cumecs) of water was released on Monday and 30 cumecs on Sunday to ward off the salinity.
