Drawing strength from the groundswell of art initiatives launched in the city in the wake of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale’s advent in 2012, the students of Sacred Heart College, Thevara, are now gearing up to turn their campus into an abode of contemporary art with works, workshops and performances.

Titled Parva-2016, the arts extravaganza jointly organised by the college students’ union and the management will be on from February 17 to 21.

“The students have already begun to draw graffiti on the college walls. On February 17, we will hold a ‘Meet the artist’ event in which exponents of yesteryear and esoteric art forms will interact with students. There will be a painting workshop led by teachers and Lalitha Kala Akademi awardees Anil K. Vasudevan and Vinod Lakshmanan and a terracotta carnival for which students are busy making sculptures. A photo exhibition will also be held through the festival,” said Angel Mary, college magazine editor and mass communication student.

Notable among the installations will be a 10-ft tall visage of legendary writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, made using scrap material.

Recycled material

To get across the message of environment protection, students will be using recycled plastic to make a variety of sculptures and installation art. “Material will be provided to those who want to create works live as the festival is under way,” said Ms. Mary.

There will be cultural events, workshops and talks led by eminent artists such as Bose Krishnamachari. Curated by animation student M.M. Humza, the festival will be open to the public on the last two days.
