Panic prevailed for a while in Piravom Town when a running truck caught fire on Monday.

Around 9.30 am, smoke began billowing out the vehicle, transporting beds from Tamil Nadu to a local agent.

According to police, smoke began emanating from the truck as it entered the New Bazaar junction from Muvattupuzha road. On an intervention from the local people, the driver stopped the vehicle midway and attempted to put out the smoke, which eventually turned into a fire. Following an alert from the local people, the fire and rescue team rushed to the spot and doused the flames in twenty minutes. “It is suspected the consignment on the lorry touched the overhead electrical lines just before entering the town. About 25 of the 150 beds on the truck were destroyed,” officials said.
