May 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - KOCHI:

Tension prevailed in and around Muvattupuzha on Thursday following the recovery of liquor bottles from a vehicle in which Matsyafed managing director Krishna Kumar was travelling.

The episode began to unfold around 4 p.m. as the car reached the Vazhappilly junction near here. The driver lost control over the vehicle after he became drowsy, leading to a minor accident.

The locals, who rushed to the spot, recovered four liquor bottles of one litre each from inside the vehicle.

The passengers in the car, including Mr. Kumar, were rushed to a hospital nearby.

Meanwhile, activists of the Left Democratic Front staged a dharna at the spot, alleging that the liquor bottles were meant to be used to canvass votes for the UDF candidate from the Tripunithura constituency, K. Babu. The situation eased after the intervention by the local police and the protesters dispersed about half an hour later.

Defamation

Meanwhile, considering a petition by R. Venugopal, chief election agent of Mr. Babu, the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court in Maradu directed the police to probe the alleged defamation campaign against UDF candidate.
