The stage is set for the rollout of the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority’s ambitious migrant literacy programme at Perumbavoor on August 15. All pre-launch arrangements, including those for ‘Pravesanotsavam’, a reception to usher in ‘migrant students’ to classes, are in place.

Meanwhile, a workshop for councillors and instructors was organised at Perumbavoor on Saturday ahead of the launch of the programme. KSLMA Director P.S. Sreekala inaugurated the workshop. Municipal chairperson Sathi Jayakrishnan presided.

It was decided that reception committees would meet at all municipal wards before July 27. Friends’ circles will be formed at each literacy study centre. Registration of participants will be completed before August 13.

KSLMA’s pilot project aims at making migrants literate in Malayalam and Hindi in four months. One centre will be assigned for the programme in each of the 27 wards in Perumbavoor municipality. Flexible class timings have been fixed, especially during weekends, so that migrants can turn up for sessions without their work getting affected.

As regards meeting the project cost, KSLMA is looking forward to assistance from local bodies and voluntary organisations, besides sponsorships.

Study centres

Classes will be held for five hours in a week. Five to 10 study centres of 15 to 20 participants will be opened under KSLMA’s Continuing Education Centres (CEC) within the municipality. CEC Preraks will be given special charge as study centre coordinators. For the record, a trial classroom held last month in the municipality had evoked encouraging response, with 44 migrants attending it.

Each study centre will be under an instructor proficient in Malayalam and Hindi. Qualified persons among migrants will also be roped in for imparting training. CECs, libraries, schools, public places, work sites, and shelters of migrant workers will serve as study centres.

Perumbavoor municipal vice chairperson Nisha Vijayan, municipal secretary Saifudeen, migrant literacy project coordinator E.V. Anilkumar, Literacy Mission district coordinator V.V. Mathew, assistant coordinator T.V. Sreejan, and standing committee chairpersons also attended the workshop.
