Policeman held on charge of molesting woman

October 30, 2013 12:14 pm | Updated 12:14 pm IST - Kochi:

A civil police officer from the Crime Branch was detained here on Tuesday evening on charge of molesting a woman at the Vyttila Mobility Hub.

Suresh, 35, allegedly molested a 25-year-old woman at the mobility hub. The incident occurred around 6.30 p.m. The young woman, an engineer with a private company in the city, told the police that Suresh misbehaved with her and tried to grope her when she was standing at the hub waiting for a bus. She allegedly slapped the man following the incident. Police officials said that Suresh, who was in civil clothes, hit her in retaliation.

People standing around noticed the quarrel between the two and intervened. After hearing what happened, they surrounded Suresh and immediately alerted the police, who arrived and took Suresh in custody.

The Maradu police took the woman’s statement and registered a case against Suresh on charge of misbehaving with the woman. Suresh, a native of Mararikulam in Alappuzha district, is a civil police officer with the Organised Crime Wing of the Crime Branch in Alappuzha.

The incident comes even as the city police are on the lookout for one of the two accused in a case in which a woman was molested in a private bus in the city last week. Top police officials in the city had then said that stricter security measures would be put in place to ensure the safety of women.
