Glowing tributes were paid to former Chief Minister and Congress leader K. Karunakaran at a function marked to unveil his portrait at the Town Hall here on Thursday.

Speaking after unveiling the portrait, senior Congress leader A.K. Antony urged the Kerala Assembly to recommend to the Centre to name the Cochin International Airport after Karunakaran. “No other leader had to combat stiff opposition from multiple quarters ever since the project was conceived. Now, as per the policy of the Centre, an airport can be named after a person only if the State Assembly adopts a resolution in this regard,” said Mr. Antony.

Presiding over the function, Mayor Thottathil Raveendran reminisced his association with the senior leader while Janata Dal (United) State president M.P. Veerendrakumar said he had opposed Karunakaran politically but respected him as a leader. K. Muraleedharan, MLA, and M.K. Raghavan also spoke at the function organised by the Leader Study Centre and Nehru Vichara Vedi.
