The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has assigned the School of Management Studies, Cusat, to conduct a feasibility study about the parking facilities in metro-rail stations across the route of the proposed Kochi metro rail.
The aim is to provide maximum parking facilities at metro stations, thus encouraging people to commute by the metro. This would in turn lessen congestion on roads.
The proposed feasibility study will essentially focus on understanding the ridership (number of passengers who ride a public transport system) from all 23 stations between Aluva and Pettah, including the two terminal stations at the extreme end. It would also assess the number of two, three and four wheelers which would require parking slots in the metro rail corridor. The study would also propose the layout for parking facilities, with traffic circulation plan for each station, KMRL sources said.
The project report submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) does not have specifications regarding parking facilities at the stations, they added. “By providing ample parking facilities, we aim to integrate Personal Transport Systems with the Mass Rapid Transit System,” said Tom Jose, the managing director of the KMRL.
