Over 200 seek medical help during marathon

As many as 200 persons including athlete Preeja Sreedharan, who participated in the Cochin International Half Marathon on Sunday, sought medical assistance.

A medical bulletin issued by the Medical Trust Hospital, medical partner of the event, said that majority of the patients attended by the medical staff during the marathon complained of breathlessness, muscle cramps and dehydration.

Two persons, Madhu Madhava Kurup, a 40-year-old KSEB employee and Arun, a 26-year-old engineer from Perumbavoor were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with breathing problems.

Athlete Preeja Sreedharan, who pulled out of the race after complaining uneasiness, was discharged after administering primary medical aid and health check-up at the site.

Devikulam Sub-Collector Gokul G.R. approached the hospital soon after completing the run.

The hospital had made elaborate arrangements for the athletes to have a safe and healthy run including a 40-bed facility at the base camp and 12 clinics along the marathon’s route.
