Registering their strong protest against repeated attacks on online taxis at railway stations and other places, the All Kerala Online Taxi Drivers’ Union has warned of stern and decisive action if they continue.

The warning comes in the wake of its executive committee meeting held here on Thursday. Trade unions of autorickshaws and conventional taxi cabs that oppose the operation of online taxis from railway stations must make their stand clear in the High Court, instead of launching attacks on online taxis, said T.R.S. Kumar, president of the online taxi union.

The union also expressed concern at drivers with criminal background managing to obtain fake police clearance certificates for enrolling in online taxi companies. The police must maintain vigil against this, he said. Meanwhile, members of Ernakulam South/North Auto Taxi Coordination Committee have begun a relay hunger strike at the Ernakulam South Railway Station, protesting against the opening of kiosks of online taxi firms.

Up to the police: Railway

Railway officials maintained that it was up to the police to take action against persons who unleash violence against online taxi cabs and kiosks in railway stations, since it was a law and order issue.
