Onam festivities begin with art, cultural shows

Programmes to be held daily at places across the district; artists from 12 States to perform at Durbar Hall Ground today

Lavanyam-2017, the week-long Onam celebrations organised by the Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and the district administration began at DH Ground and Marine Drive on Friday with an evening of art and dance events.

They included Parunthu Pattu, Kalipaattu, and Theyyapaattu. From Saturday, programmes will be held daily in the evening at DH Ground, Marine Drive, Fort Kochi, Palluruthy, Kumbalangi, Cherai, Munambam, Thrikkakara, Piravom, Muvattupuzha, Bhoothathankettu, Perumbavoor, and Kuttambuzha. The official inauguration of Lavanyam is on Saturday.

“Dwaya”, presented by the Transgender Arts and Charitable Society at Durbar Hall Ground, was a major highlight of the opening day. Marine Drive saw Kathaprasangam by Edakochi Salimkumar.

The programmes scheduled for the coming days include folk dance, Theyyam, Sufi dance, gazal, ganamela, comedy show, Kathaprasangam, fusion band, Kolkali, short film festival and a dance performance by actor Manju Warrier.

On Saturday, artistes from 12 States will perform at Durbar Hall ground. The Vasco da Gama square at Fort Kochi will have a sufi dance show while a live folk music show will be held at Kumbalangi. Cine actor Tini Tom and team will present a comedyshow at Bhoothathankettu at 7.30 p.m.

A sufi dance will be held at Fort Kochi, while naadan paattukal will be rendered in Kumbalangi.

On Sunday, a one-man show by P.C. Chandrabose will be followed by a musical evening featuring differently-abled singers, organised by Thanal Paraplegic Care at Durbar Hall Ground. Cine artiste Parvathy Nambiar will showcase Koodiyattom.
