Official Onam festival to begin tomorrow

The district administration and DTPC will illuminate pedestrian-dense Park Avenue Road and organise a slew of art and cultural programmes at DH Ground to officially hail the Onam festive season in Ernakulam.

‘Lavanyam 2015 – Onam celebrations’ organised jointly by the DTPC and the district administration will kick off here on Wednesday evening. It will be on till August 31 at Durbar Hall Grounds. ‘Lavanyam’ will begin with a rally from Marine Drive Ground in which dance, art and martial art forms like kathakali, theyyam, arjunanritham, kalaripayattu, pulikali, naganritham, mayilattam, kottakavadi, chendamelam, karakattam, kummattikali, bommanattam, velakali and panchavadyam will be on show. A children’s Mahabali contest too has been arranged.

Following the inaugural function, the stage at DH Ground will liven up with a slew of dance and cultural programmes.

On Onam eve (Uthradam Day), a special song programme led by music director Jerry Amaldev will be held at the venue, followed by a mega show. The evening of Tiruvonam day (August 28) will see temple art, chakyar koothu, music and comedy programmes unfurl before the audience. On August 29, different forms of music programmes would be organised. Cine stars will add a spark to the celebrations on August 30, with a show led by Guinness Pakru. Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri will present a musical programme on August 31.

Lavanyam will reverberate in Fort Kochi with a kathaprasangam on August 28 and music programme on August 29. Chavittunadakam is among the programmes planned at Mulavukad. Events have been arranged at Trikkakara, Kothamangalam and Piravom too.

Kumbasree women self-groups too would actively participate in Onam events.
