Southern Railway has given its nod to build an overbridge near the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) at Ponekkara. This was announced by the Edappally Vikasana Samiti and the Mahatma Gandhi Residents’ Association in separate statements issued here on Saturday.
The Railway, in its reply to the Edappally Viskasana Samiti’s queries under the Right to Information Act, had said the general arrangement drawing for the project was approved on April 8, samiti convenor K. G. Radhakrishnan said. He said the Samiti played a significant role in getting the overbridge sanctioned by the Railway.
General secretary of Mahatma Gandhi Residents’ Association K. A. Francis said the association, AIMS and Eranakulam District Residents’ Associations’ Apex Council had worked together to get either an overbridge or an underpass sanctioned to link the Devankulangara-Ponekkara and Ponekkara-Cheranalloor roads.
The statement said administrative sanction for the project was received on May 17, 2011. It claimed that the Railway would complete the work in six months.
Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju had promised to extend all help for the project.
The communication from the Railway to the Samiti said the tentative cost of the proposed railway overbridge would be Rs. 8.99 crore.
