KOCHI: A baby born to a woman on Thursday was handed over to the relatives of another woman who was yet to undergo Cesarean section at the Government Medical College at Kalamassery.

Hospital superintendent Dr. Anil Kumar said it was a case of human error and not negligence as the baby had been tagged properly.

The nursing assistant who handed over the baby to the relatives of the other woman mistook them to be the kin of the woman who had given birth to the baby, he said.

The issue was sorted out after the tag was shown to the relatives. However, the superintendent issued a memo to the staff. He said the hospital followed a system of tagging babies.

Similar incident had happened earlier at the hospital. Incidentally, the baby was not tagged then, leading to a furore. The medical college authorities clarified that there was no scope for such mistakes at the hospital.
