“Motherhood is a matter of pride for any woman,” said actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma, the guest of honour at Mother’s Day celebrations held jointly by the Ernakulam Women’s Association and The Hindu in the city on Thursday.

She said although the word “parents” signified both father and mother, it was the latter who played a more important role between the two.

“Mothers take up the responsibility of nurturing character in children; she brings them up in faith in god and men,” she said.

Present day lifestyle had changed the way motherhood was perceived. “Today’s mothers are busy with their jobs and find little quality time to spend with their children.”

She said she regretted the fact that she could not spend enough time with her daughter because of her film commitments. “My daughter still complains that her mother has not spent enough time with her.”

Dr. Safeena Anas, consultant-obstetrician and gynaecologist at KIMS hospital, delivered the keynote address and interacted with the participants. A free medical check-up was conducted. The event was co-sponsored by KIMS hospital, Kochi; South Indian Bank; and Mega Mart, Vyttila.

K.P. Narayanan, assistant regional general manager (circulation), The Hindu, said Mother’s Day was the most appropriate time to introspect how much each one had given back to their mothers.

He said the present day society was drifting away fast from the responsibility of caring for its mothers.

Quoting Swami Vivekananda, he said there was no god greater than mother. He said mothers were angels sent by god to take care of children.

Shobha Thampi, president, Ernakulam Women’s Association, who welcomed the gathering , said a mother’s job was the highest paid job because the payment was in terms of love and not money.
