Mahasweta Devi offers support to evictees

December 24, 2012 09:36 am | Updated 09:36 am IST - KOCHI:

Writer and social activist Mahasweta Devi on Sunday visited Moolampilly to offer her support to the continuing struggle for a fair rehabilitation by the families whose lands had been acquired by the government for the Vallarpadam container road.

Ms. Mahasweta Devi was offered a reception by the Moolampilly Coordination Committee.

She recalled that she was visiting Moolampilly for the third time, but was sorry to see that the evictees were still not fully rehabilitated.

Open letter

She said she would write about this injustice and also write an open letter to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

The Jnanpith award winner also visited Kadamakkudy where an agitation against building a 45-metre wide road to Paravur through the Pokkali rice fields is picking up momentum. She offered her support to an alternative route proposed by the local people.

The alternative alignment is said to greatly reduce the damage to Pokkali fields.
