Veteran trade union leader M.M. Lawrence has stepped down from the leadership of a union he had been leading for years together. Mr. Lawrence stepped down as the president of the Kerala Matsya Thozhilali Federation (CITU) at its State conference which concluded here on Monday. The organisation, however, retained him as one of its vice-presidents. V.V. Saseendran, the general secretary of the organisation, was elevated as its president.

Mr. Lawrence had been part of the leadership of the organisation since it formation. He had also led it as its State president for nearly two decades.

The decision to relieve Mr. Lawrence of the post was taken considering his old age, said an office-bearer of the organisation.

Earlier, Mr. Lawrence was removed from the post of general secretary of the State unit of the CITU.
